Waterproofing of Tunnels and Traffic Lanes

The Carmel Tunnels project entailed the construction of two pairs of tunnels over an approx. 6 km. route linking the western to the eastern approaches of Haifa. In each tunnel two traffic lanes were laid in either direction.

Ashtrom Industries, through the Itumit subsidiary, carried out the tunnel and traffic lane waterproofing processes, in order to prevent the ingress of water from the external or internal envelope. The waterproofing works were executed over an underground area of about 30,000 sq.m. using a two-component bituminous spray of varying thickness. This method obviates the need to await the setting of the concrete. In addition, the tunnel wall sealing materials kept the water out, speeded up the work and led to cost reductions.
